Antoine De Winter BE, b. 1985
Antoine De Winter is a visual artist and photographer based in Brussels.
After studying medicine and anthropology at the University of Leuven, he turned to photography following his doctorate and graduated from the Agnès Varda School in 2018.
His work stems from an inseparable dual process: shooting in the field and alchemical
transformation in the studio. Camera in hand, facing the landscape, he captures the light of the place. Then, through traditional processes —ambrotype, cyanotype, anthracotype—he physically incorporates the material of thatsame territory into the development of the image.
Salt collected by the sea, local rock, and glacial soot become the photographic agents that bring forth what has been seen. The photographed place thus becomes the image itself: what he calls “geological photography.”
What interests him is not the simple capture of a moment, but the moment of the image’s emergence—that fragile instant when it is constructed in the encounter between captured light and collected matter, when it is not yet fully there. In the face of the contemporary dematerialization of the image, he affirms a slowness of gesture, a search for essentiality, an acceptance of imperfection and impermanence.
His works, unique and fragile, reveal themselves slowly, under certain angles of light,
inviting an attentive experience where the gaze can rest, linger, and meditate.
Antoine De Winter has received awards, including the Soutien à la création artiste contemporain (Support for Contemporary Artistic Creation) from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in 2021.
Antoine De Winter's works have been presented , notably at Galerie 41 (Antwerp), the Centre Wallon d’art contemporain and the Dvir Gallery (Brussels). He was also part of the Off programme at the Rencontres photographiques d'Arles in 2018.
In 2024-2025, his work has been exhibited at the InCadaquès Photo Festival, Approche fair, the gallery Les Filles du Calvaire and Hangar Gallery. He has been represented by Hangar Gallery since September 2024.

Antoine de Winter / Followers 7 - 10 Nov 2024Hangar Gallery participated in the 8th Edition of Approche with the artist Antoine De Winter. Antoine De Winter's practice questions the production of photographic images through experimentation with the medium, the materials used and their layout in space. In his latest project, Followers (2024), Antoine De Winter explores self-representation in the age of social networks and artificial intelligence, using traditional photographic techniques. After collecting stolen portraits from fake Instagram user profiles, Antoine then compiled them via AI software to recreate a synthetic image, close to the original yet so distant. Transposed in cyanotype on fabric and modeled in relief with beeswax, these faces acquire a disquieting presence whose blue echoes the blue light of screens. Other faces are revealed on gold-leafed glass plates, acting as icons of our contemporary narcissism. With Followers, Antoine De Winter creates images that evoke the ambiguous feeling of watching while being watched.
