Lior Gal IL, b. 1977
Lior Gal’s practice moves between photography and more pictorial forms of image-making. While photography remains the starting point of his work, in certain series he introduces collage as a means of transforming the image, adding a fantastical dimension to its underlying realism.
Often working in black and white, Gal creates images in which seemingly opposing worlds confront one another. His almost otherworldly photographs combine a sense of scientific observation with a poetic and imaginary dimension. His recent research has also explored movement, particularly through the motif of kites, developed during extended periods of work in India and Austria.
Education
Lior Gal moved to Paris at the age of 21, where he studied photography at the MJM Graphic Design School. He later worked as an assistant to artist Anselm Kiefer for several years.

Residencies
During an extended journey across India in 2023, Lior Gal undertook a residency at Emami Art in Kolkata, where he developed his interest in kites and the notion of movement. He continued this research during a residency at Bildraum Studio in Vienna in 2024, which was followed by the solo exhibition Knots on Silence.
