Biography

Antoine De Winter's pratice lies at the intersection of science and creativity. A doctor and anthropologist trained at the University of Louvain, he devoted himself to photography after graduating from the Agnès Varda school. His work explores the materiality of the image and the processes involved in its production, combining photography, sculpture, and digital technologies. He uses alternative processes —particularly on glass — to give his research a physical presence.

With Blindfolded (2023), he questions the standardization of the gaze and the disappearance of singularities in contemporary landscapes. In Followers — presented at Hangar and Approche fair in 2024 — he appropriates portraits from fake Instagram profiles to generate new faces using artificial intelligence. Printed in cyanotype on fabric and modeled with beeswax, these faces, somewhere between familiarity and strangeness, seem to emerge from the deep blue of our screens.

Also exploring rare processes such as orotone and other photosensitive techniques on glass, Antoine De Winter turns the landscape into a space for experimentation where rock and light become matter. These technical choices reflect a conceptual approach: each image becomes an object, light acquires density, and the photographic surface becomes revelatory.

His work has been exhibited at the InCadaquès Photo Festival, the Approche fair, and the gallery Les Filles du Calvaire. He has been represented by Hangar Gallery since September 2024.
